my studio looks like a yarn-bomb went off. i have a feeling a good hour or so tomorrow is going to be spent re-winding balls of yarn and putting them back in ziploc baggies.

so, i guess i collect these things. i mean, i have a big stack of them, and it makes me happy, and i'm always putzing about with an eye out for more. but i'm picky. really picky. and i dont actively search, i just sort of stumble across them and love them and buy them. but i always want more. chances are im one of the first in line to paypal you my $5 if you're making one. and my favorite chair is stuffed full of pins and needles as i patiently await the arrival of Mr. Pulaski's.

sometimes people are superawesome, and buy them for me. usually this person is JoeV, because he knows what i like. he recently bought me this thing and i am telling you about it because i think it is FanTasTic.

oh, how i love it. *sigh. you need one. you can get one here.

that's all. i have a shit-ton of Heads to make tonight.

it's not normally my style to re-make a previous design, but under certain circumstances (and only for the owner of the original) i'll make exceptions. the original of this little guy was lost in an earthquake, so here is the sparkly blue cousin, 2.0

he's still different from the original though

(second photo was original)

also, the customer who ordered the last white one asked for a hat before i ship it off:

which i thought was a pretty great idea

as much as i like shipping them off to their new homes, i also like when i have a few sitting around my art studio just for me, even if it is only for a few hours/days.

i like blue things

this ^ photo reminded me of the photo i took of my very first batch, in the spring of 2007.

the blue one on the far right was my first one.

the ones i am working on now are different, more complex, and will take longer to complete. i'm calling them the 'old gods' series, and i'll post 'em here as i get them done... :)

custom order

sometimes i'm baffled by the juxtaposition between the rotten twisted thoughts and ideas that crash around my brain all day, and then these saccharine weirdos that come out of my fingers at night.

but i can't help it, i have to love them, even the most kawaii of them are monsters to me, they tell me stories while i stitch them

custom crochets and flinging paint

Monday, January 12, 2009

as most of you know, my part-time desk-job gig offers pretty fantastic perks that make it completely tolerable.

so in this on-going series of 'melissa's desk-job-perks', i offer this:

i snagged this from the laboratory during our remodeling - it's an old solid wood test-tube drying rack. or is i call it, embroidery-thread-holder. LOVE! i've recently split my art studio into 2 halves to keep it neat and organized (and to keep the yarn out of the oil paints), so this is now hanging over my 'sewing' desk.

in the words of david cross,
I AM MAKING A BIRDHOUSE!

or, i made one. i made it out of an old pair of corduroy pants, and some felt, and a cereal box, and thread, and polyfil and two little button eyes. it's about six inches high.

also, i've been making oil paintings, but you cant see those. nyah nyah internet.

fuzz face

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

my favorite part of botanical illustrations is the little fancy script that reads "Fig. 6" or "Fig. A" and things like that.

Felt, some old corduroy pants, and a need to relax by sewing and watching bob hoskins in Mermaids last night after a looooong day at the desk job.
